The Terrace Houses of Ephesus

How wealthy Ephesians lived, preserved in frescoes and mosaics.

3 min read

Across from Curetes Street, a group of residential units climbs a hillside in terraces. These were the homes of prosperous Ephesians, inhabited over several centuries, and they survive in far better detail than the public monuments because their rooms were buried and preserved.

Inside you find painted walls, marble panelling and floor mosaics, arranged around courtyards that brought light and air into the houses. A modern roof now protects the excavated rooms, and walkways lead you through them at the level of the original floors.

The houses are an optional extra with a separate admission ticket, and they take around 45 minutes to see properly. They suit visitors who want to understand daily life as well as grand architecture.

Visitor tip

Decide on the Terrace Houses before arriving, so your guide can allow time for them.
