The House of the Virgin Mary

A quiet pilgrimage place above Ephesus, visited by believers of several faiths.

3 min read

High in the pine woods of Mount Koressos, a few kilometres from the ancient city, stands a small stone chapel known in Turkish as Meryemana. Christian tradition holds that Mary spent her last years in or near Ephesus, and the site has been venerated as her home since its identification in the 19th century.

Pilgrims of several faiths come here, as Mary is also honoured in Islam. Visitors light candles, drink from the spring and tie written wishes to a wall near the chapel. Several popes have visited, which has shaped the quiet atmosphere of the place.

Historians treat the identification as a matter of tradition rather than proven fact, and your guide can explain both views. The setting alone, cool and green after the stone of the ancient city, makes the stop worthwhile.

Visitor tip

Dress modestly and keep your voice low; the chapel is an active place of prayer.
